Cell Culture Media
To grow cells in a dish, a complex media providing all the nutrient source is required. The most commonly used media are basal media or DMEM.Basal media contains glucose or galactose as carbon source. Vitamins like thiamine, riboflavin, and biotin which acts as a cofactor for many cellular processes. Zinc, Copper, and others are present as trace elements. Keto acids like pyruvate oxaloacetate are present as an additional energy source and also act as intermediates in the Krebs cycle. Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) is another very commonly used media. It is the modified version of Basal Eagle medium (BEM) with a higher concentration of amino acids and vitamins, along with extra supplementary components. Cells of human, monkey, hamster, rat, mouse, chicken and fish origin can be cultured using DMEM.For plant cells, culture media in addition to Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen also contains macroelements like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S) for adequate growth and morphogenesis.
