Centrifuge Rotors

A centrifuge consists of a compartment that spins around a central axis. This spinning motion generates RCF (Relative Centrifugal Force) and is what leads to the separation of particles based on density. RCF can be obtained by multiplying the force with gravity. The rotor is the spinning unit, which has small compartments at certain angles to house the test tubes. The samples which need to be separated can be placed in these test tubes.

There are different kinds of rotors available. A few of them are:

Swing bucket rotors: These are ideal for isopycnic and rate-zonal centrifugation. In this set-up, the tubes are housed in buckets which are not rigidly attached to the rotor. The buckets are attached in such a way that they can spin horizontally. The precipitate will be obtained at the bottom centre of the tube.
Fixed angle rotors: The application of these rotors is to remove debris or to obtain pellets from a sample. In this case, the bucket holds the tubes at an exact angle always (usually 45 degrees). The precipitate obtained is found on the walls of the tube.
Vertical rotors: In this case, the tube lies parallel to the axis of rotation. Run time on centrifuges possessing this type of rotor is short.
