Filter Paper

Filter Paper

A Filter paper is a laboratory supply which is a semi-permeable paper barrier used to filter solutions. To filter a solution, the filter paper is placed perpendicular to the flowof liquid or air flow. The sample is then allowed to pass through the paper, and molecules or substances which are larger than the pore sizes of the paper are retained by the filter paper, while liquids and smaller substances pass through. The solution which has passed through the filter paper is referred to as filtrate.

Filter papers for laboratory applications are high grade and come in various types. Qualitative filter papers are available to determine materials. They come in different grades with varying pore sizes from 2 m to 25 m. For quantitative and gravimetric analysis, quantitative filter papers are used which are ash-free. Chromatography filter papers have a specific flow rate for water and absorption speed, which maximizes the efficiency of paper chromatography.
