Incubators
Incubators are routinely used in cell biology, molecular biology and microbiology laboratories to grow and maintain microbial and animal cell cultures. The main purpose of laboratory incubators is to maintain a certain set of desired conditions that are optimum for the growth of the culture. With the help of incubators, it is possible to manipulate the temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and oxygen content of the environment in which the culture is being grown. Sterility within an incubator is also essential and hence, they are usually equipped with HEPA filters and may also use antimicrobial copper components. Several incubator designs are available which suit specific experimental needs. Incubators of varying volume capacities and storage configurations are available. For environmental studies, incubators equipped with biological oxygen demand (BOD) units are used. Some other types of incubators include the bacteriological incubators, CO2 incubators, shaking incubators, hybridization incubators and bioreactors.
