Sera or animal Serum refers all of the blood components excluding the red blood cells and the coagulating factor. Because of the antibodies and growth factors contained in sera, its usage is very significant in the cell culture techniques. Some commonly use sera are obtained from the horse, bovine, rabbit etc.

Most of these Sera is sterile filtered and heat inactivated to inactivate serum complement which may otherwise inhibit or destroy the cell.
