Sterilization
In biological laboratories, sterilization is an essential process. Through sterilization, it is ensured that all lab equipment, surfaces, containers and reagents are free from undesired microorganisms, which ensures better results. Sterilization is conducted using several methods such as autoclaving, gassing, wiping surfaces with a disinfectant, etc. Also, to ensure that the sterilization has been performed effectively, several sterilization indicators are routinely used in laboratories. Autoclaving is a common practice which eradicates microbes from experimental media, glassware and some plasticware. Autoclave indicator tapes are used to make sure that the autoclaving is effective. These tapes change colour when exposed to the ideal autoclave temperature conditions. Certain laboratories prefer to use biological indicators to monitor the steam conditions during autoclaving. Biological indicators which detect the presence of spores are also used at times. During steam sterilization, the equipment to be sterilized are wrapped in wrapping paper.
