Vortex also known as Vortex mixer or a Vortex shaker is one of the basic equipments found in laboratories. In this device, an electric motor moves a cupped rubber rapidly in a circular motion which is used for mixing of the reagents, suspending cells in biological or chemistry experiments like the enzyme and protein analysis. The sample may be in a vial or in test tubes of different sizes. The vortex speed is adjustable and usually ranges from 100 to 3,200 rpm. Sometimes the sample may be too sensitive or too delicate in which case vortexing is not suitable so as to avoid degradation. The rubber cup used could be of different styles or shapes. Vortex can be placed inside incubator as well as cold rooms.
