It is available as a powder which is not miscible or difficult to mix in water, is soluble in ethyl alcohol, however insoluble in paraffin oil. It has a boiling point of 302 C and a melting point of around 9 - 11 C. It must be stored in a tightly closed container in a cool and dry, well-ventilated area. While it is stable in most conditions, it is incompatible with oxidizing agents.

It has also been used in research, such as, the stereoselective reduction of 1-acetonapthone in aqueous media by whole cells of Geotrichum candidum has been investigated in various organic co-solvents. Magnetic field effects on the photo-induced electron-transfer reaction between 1-acetonaphthone and diphenylamine in micellar solution have also been analysed by laser flash photolysis.
