The product is used for the estimation of total phenolic content in samples and for determination of total protein by Lowry method. The mechanisms of the reactions behind the Lowry method is not properly understood but it is considered as the reduction of the FolinCiocalteu reagent and oxidation of aromatic residues (mainly tryptophan, also tyrosine) producing an intense blue molecule known as heteropolymolybdenum Blue.
