High grade alkaline peptone water is supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a cream to yellow homogenous free flowing powder which has a pH in the range of 8.2 to 8.6. It is advisable to store this product between 10-30C in a tightly closed container. Once opened, alkaline peptone water should be properly stored in a dry place, after tightly capping the bottle in order to prevent lump formation due to the hygroscopic nature of the product. Store this product in dry ventilated area, away from extreme temperatures and sources of ignition.

Alkaline peptone water (APW) is recommended as an enrichment broth for isolating Vibrio cholerae from clinical samples and non-clinical samples (suspected food & water samples). The relatively high pH of the medium (approximately 8.4) provides a favourable environment for the growth of Vibrio. Vibrio cholerae grow rapidly on alkaline peptone water, producing turbidity on and just below the surface of the medium within 4-6 hours.

Peptone provides nitrogen and carbon source, long chain amino acids, vitamins and other essential nutrients. Sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium. Prolonged incubation will result in growth of the suppressed contaminating organisms to develop. Growth in tubes is indicated by turbidity compared to an un-inoculated tube (control). Growth from the enrichment broth is used for plating on selective media. For biochemical identification a pure culture is recommended.
