Amidol has a wide range of applications in chemical and biological industries. This compound is popularly used as a colour accelerator in photographic developers. This compound is considered unusual amongst other developing agents which work most effectively in slightly acid conditions rather than the strongly alkaline conditions required for most other developers. The colour changing property on oxidation has been used in colorimetric assays for measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration in water supplies, rivers, etc. Amidol has also been used in dye manufacturing industries. These reagents are suitable for industrial and research applications.
