This reagent solution is a preparation of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrated copper(II) sulphate, together with potassium sodium tartrate. Potassium sodium tartrate is added to chelate and hence stabilize the cupric ions. The reagent is available as a blue coloured solution. While it is stable under general conditions, this reagent is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
