Dextrose (anhydrous) is a high-grade reagent supplied by Micromaster. Few other chemical names used to denote this reagent include, (2R,3S,4R,5R)-2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxyhexanal, D(+)-Glucose, Aldehydo-D-glucose and Glucose, anhydrous. It is available in the form of a white solid which is easily soluble in cold water. It is stable if stored according to the recommended conditions. If exposed to excessive heat or in case of burning, it can generate hazardous decomposition products like carbon oxides. It is incompatible with strong oxidising agents, strong acids and strong bases.

This reagent is the anhydrous form of D-glucose, a natural monosaccharide and carbohydrate. Dextrose serves to replenish lost nutrients and electrolytes as it provides metabolic energy. Hence, it is the primary ingredient in oral rehydration salts (ORS) and is used in intravenous (IV) fluids to provide nutrients to patients under intensive care who are unable to receive them by the oral route. Solutions containing dextrose restore blood glucose levels and provide calories. Dextrose anhydrous also plays a role in the production of proteins and in lipid metabolism. Being a common natural sugar, dextrose is involved in processes like glycosylation, energy production and formation of glycans that are involved in providing structure to the cells. It is used as a supplement for numerous cellular processes and in cell culture.
