Mossel created EE Broth, Mossel, which is a recommended medium for enriching gram-negative bacteria that can tolerate bile during the biological testing of food and animal feed. This medium complies with the standardized methods of USP/EP/JP/BP/IP. The combination of pancreatic digest of gelatin and glucose monohydrate in this medium is suitable for most Enterobacteriaceae. Gram-positive bacteria are inhibited by brilliant green and purified ox-bile. Phosphates serve as an effective buffer that neutralizes acids produced by lactose fermenters, which could otherwise hinder bacterial growth.
