Fluid Thioglycollate Medium was developed by Brewer to facilitate the rapid growth of both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms through the inclusion of a reducing agent and a minimal amount of agar. Fluid Thioglycollate Medium is suggested for the assessment of sterility in antibiotics, biologicals, and food products, as well as for determining the sporicidal effect and phenol coefficient of disinfectants. However, it is designed specifically for the analysis of transparent liquids or water-soluble materials. Dextrose monohydrate, a pancreatic digest of casein, yeast extract, and L-cystine serves as a growth factor essential for bacterial proliferation. Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine act as reducing agents, diminishing the oxidation-reduction potential by eliminating oxygen.
