Low melting agarose for Nucleic acid Electrophoresis is a product from Genei. Agarose is a polysaccharide which is widely used in laboratories for Agarose gel electrophoresis. Agarose is obtained in its raw form (agar) from a type of seaweed. Further purification of the crude from yields agarose, which has a unique gelling property. It completely dissolves in water when heated to a high temperature and once it cools down, it forms a gel. Agarose has a very high hysteresis, thus making it a very good gel. This property of agarose is used to prepare gels for electrophoresis of nucleic acids. The agarose gel creates a porous matrix wherein the nucleic acids move under the influence of an electric charge and separate out based on their molecular weights. Gels of different porosity can be created by increasing or decreasing the concentration of agarose.

Apart from being used for agarose gel electrophoresis, the Low Melting Agarose from Genei can be used for extracting DNA fragments from the gel after electrophoresis. It is provided free of DNases and RNases to prevent nucleic acid degradation. It is also used to prepare gels of specialized electrophoresis applications such as comet assay. This agarose gels at 26.9C and melts at a low temperature of 68C, thus preventing degradation of nucleic acids while extraction from the gel.
