It should be noted that m-TGE Broth is not meant to be used for diagnosing diseases or other conditions in humans. M-TGE stands for membrane Tryptone Glucose Extract. Bower and Hucker developed a medium during the 1930s that was designed to detect bacteria in milk and other dairy products. To study thermophilic bacteria in milk, Prickett used a glucose agar containing tryptone, which was known as Yeast Dextrose Agar. Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar was adopted by the American Public Health Association (APHA) in 1948 for testing milk and dairy products. Presently, Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar is specified by the APHA for use in the heterotrophic plate count procedure for testing bottled water. M-TGE Broth is a nonselective nutrient medium that is used to determine bacterial counts through the membrane filtration method. The formulation of this broth is identical to Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar, with the exception of the agar being omitted and the ingredients being at twice the concentration.
