MacConkey Broth is a product by Micromaster. The broth is intended for the identification of coliforms from samples for microbial limit testing. A primitive form of the broth was created by MacConkey, which contained 0.5% sodium taurocholate. The current MacConkeys broth contains a neutral red indicator and oxygall. The medium is composed of the pancreatic digest of gelatine. This component provides the growth nutrients which are essential for microbial growth. The carbohydrate source in this medium is lactose monohydrate. Dehydrated ox-bile is also incorporated into the medium for the inhibition of gram-positive organisms. The indicator in this medium is bromo cresol purple, which changes the colour of the medium when the pH reduces below 6.8. This allows the selection of non-lactose fermenters, which will not allow the pH to drop.
