Plasmodium falciparum parasites synthesize several proteins containing large amounts of the amino acid histidine, which are commonly referred to as histidine-rich proteins (PfHRP). PfHRP-2 is synthesized by the parasite and released from infected erythrocytes as a water-soluble protein .
