Metol is a high-grade reagent supplied by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries. Few other chemical names used to denote this reagent include, N-Methyl-p-aminophenol sulfate, P-Methylaminophenolsulfate, Paramethylaminophenol sulfate, Graphol, Metatyl and Planetol. It is the hydrogen sulfate (HSO4) salt of the protonated derivative of N-methylaminophenol. It is available in the form of beige coloured crystalline powder. Metol is soluble in water (4.7 g/100ml at 15C). It is stable as long it is stored as per the recommended storage conditions. Burning or prolonged exposure to heat or flammable sources may produce hazardous decomposition products like carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides. It is incompatible with acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides and strong oxidizing agents. Several methods exist for the preparation of N-methylaminophenol. It arises by decarboxylation of N-4-hydroxyphenylglycine (Glycin).
