Nutrient agar is provided by Micromaster. This agar is compatible with the growth of several microorganisms. It is also enriched with other nutrients such as blood, plasma, etc. It is considered to be the basic growth medium for the culture of most microorganisms, including fastidious species. It is non-selective in nature and has a simple composition. The growth of fastidious microbes is promoted by the addition serum, egg yolk, horse or sheep blood, etc. The medium is also compatible with fluorogenic detection with the incorporation of MUG (4-methylumbelliferyl--D-glucuronide). The media contains peptic digest of animal tissue, beef extract and yeast extract, which serve as a nitrogen, carbon and vitamin source. These elements also provide trace nutrients. The osmotic equilibrium is maintained with the help of sodium chloride.
