Potassium Chloride by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. This is a metal halide salt of potassium and chlorine. This reagent is available as a crystalline white powder which is soluble in water, boiling water, glycerol, or ethanol, however it is insoluble in ether or acetone. Solutions of KCl are common standards where it is soluble in a variety of polar solvents. While potassium chloride is extracted from minerals sylvite, carnallite, and potash and also sea water, it can be generated by treating potassium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid.

Potassium chloride is widely used in chemical and biological sectors. This salt is commonly used in the preparation of phosphate buffered saline and for the extraction and solubilisation of proteins. It is a good potassium source in various microbiological media for culturing cells. It is also used in the hypotonic KCl-propidium iodide protocol for the univariate analysis of metaphase chromosomes, dissociation of eukaryotic ribosomes into subunits by high concentrations of potassium (0.3-1.0 M), preparation of mitochondria, provides an ionic osmotic support for those tissues that assume a gelatinous consistency upon homogenization.
