Rappaport Vassiliadis Salmonella Enrichment Broth (IP) is supplied by TM Media. This broth was formulated by Rappaport et al., for enhancing the growth of Salmonella species. However, a modified medium, known as Rappaport Vassiliadis Salmonella Enrichment Broth, selectively promotes the growth of Salmonella species. This selectivity is due to Salmonella's resistance to high osmotic pressure, low pH, and malachite green. However, S. typhi and S. choleraesuis, which are sensitive to malachite green, may be suppressed in this medium. Soya peptone offers crucial nutrients required for bacterial growth, while phosphate salts serve as a buffer to regulate the pH. Magnesium chloride helps maintain a high osmotic pressure, which is suitable for the survival of Salmonella, which can generally tolerate a slightly higher osmotic pressure. Malachite green inhibits microorganisms other than Salmonella, making it selective for Salmonella growth.
