The addition of sheep blood to Sheep Blood Agar Base was designed to facilitate the optimal recovery of microorganisms while maintaining their hemolytic reactions. This medium was specifically developed to be compatible with sheep blood, resulting in improved hemolytic reactions of organisms. Casein enzymic hydrolysate and yeast extract serve as sources of nitrogen, carbon, amino acids, and vitamins, while peptic digest of animal tissue provides the necessary nitrogen. Sodium chloride is included to maintain osmotic balance.
