Skim Milk Agar is supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a cream to yellow homogeneous free flowing powder which has a pH in the range of 6.8 to 7.2. This product should be stored between 10-30C in a tightly closed container. Once opened, it should be properly stored, after tightly capping the bottle. Store in dry ventilated area protected from extremes of temperature and sources of ignition.

Skim Milk Agar is recommended for cultivation and enumeration of microorganisms encountered in dairy industry. It is used for the demonstration of coagulation and proteolysis of casein. The medium is recommended by APHA for cultivation and enumeration of microorganisms encountered in dairy industry. Favourable conditions for growth of organisms encountered in milk, can be created by adding SM powder to any nutrient-rich medium. The number of bacteria isolated thus is more than the number of organisms isolated on a regular medium. Proteolytic bacteria hydrolyze casein to form soluble nitrogenous compounds indicated as clear zone surrounding the colonies. More clear zones are seen on milk agar if, the bacteria produce acid from fermentable carbohydrates in the medium. Tryptone provides amino acids and other complex nitrogenous substances. Yeast extract supplies vitamin B complex. Addition of SM powder in the medium makes the conditions optimal for microorganisms encountered in milk. Glucose acts as the carbon source.
