The growth of bacteria, particularly those that do not thrive well on other media, can be improved by incorporating 1% glycerol, 0.5% polysorbate 80, and 0.07% soya lecithin in the SCDA medium. Glycerol serves as a source of carbon and energy for the microorganisms, while polysorbate 80 and soya lecithin function as emulsifiers, promoting the absorption of nutrients by the cells. Additionally, the inclusion of a g-irradiated b-lactamase mixture at 5IU/plate in the SCDA medium confers selectivity for bacteria that are b-lactam antibiotic-resistant.
