Starch (soluble) is a high-grade reagent supplied by Micromaster. Few other chemical names used to denote this reagent include, cornstarch, amylum, clearjel, keestar, maizena and maranta. It is available in the form of a white solid which is odourless. Starch is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of a large number of glucose units joined by glycosidic bonds. It is stable if stored according to the recommended conditions. If exposed to excessive heat or in case of burning, it can generate hazardous decomposition products like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It is incompatible with oxidising agents.

Starch is converted into sugar in industries and fermented to produce ethanol in the manufacture of beer, whisky and biofuel. It is processed to produce many of the sugars used in processed foods. Mixing most starches in warm water produces a paste, such as wheatpaste, which can be used as a thickening, stiffening or gluing agent. The biggest industrial non-food use of starch is as an adhesive in the papermaking process. Starch can be applied to parts of some garments before ironing, to stiffen them. Starch can be hydrolyzed into simpler carbohydrates by acids, various enzymes, or a combination of the two. The resulting fragments are known as dextrins. In the pharmaceutical industry, starch is also used as an excipient, as tablet disintegrant, and as binder. Also, glucose from starch can be further fermented to biofuel corn ethanol using the so-called wet milling process.
