Amies transport medium without charcoal was created by Amies through the modification of Cary and Blair's medium for the transportation of microbiological specimens. This modified version of Stuart's transport medium replaces glycerophosphate with inorganic phosphate buffer, preventing the overgrowth of contaminants in faecal specimens containing Shigella which derives energy from glycerophosphate.
