It is a selective medium which is used for the selective isolation of coli-aerogenes and Enterobacteriaceae species in food products. Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar medium consists of glucose, peptone, bile salts, sodium chloride, neutral red, crystal violet, and agar. Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar consists of a pancreatic digest of gelatin which is a source of carbon, nitrogen, vitamins and minerals. Yeast extract contains B-complex vitamins that help bacteria to grow. Crystal violet and bile salts are responsible for the inhibition of gram-positive bacteria. Microbes form red-violet halos (bile precipitation) due to the presence of a Neutral Red pH indicator. Agar is the solidifying agent.
