XYLOSE LYSINE DEOXYCHOLATE AGAR (XLD AGAR) PLATE supplied by TM Media is a selective growth medium for the isolation and enumeration of Salmonella species. It consists of lactose, sucrose, sodium thiosulfate, L-Lysine, sodium chloride, xylose, yeast extract, sodium deoxycholate, ferric ammonium citrate, phenol red, and agar. Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate Agar increases the growth frequency of fastidious organisms. Yeast extract provides vitamins and sodium deoxycholate inhibits gram-positive microbes. Xylose is introduced in the medium to differentiate Shigella species, while Lysine is incorporated to differentiate Salmonella species from other non-pathogens. Non-enteric bacteria dont grow on XLD agar. On Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate Agar plates, Salmonella and Shigella species form red colonies with black centres due to the fermentation of xylose and produce hydrogen sulphide. These plates are used in clinical microbiology labs to isolate enteric pathogens from stool, blood, and urine.
