Water Analysis

Water, one of the most indispensable solvents needs to be periodically analyzed for the presence of contaminants or foreign substances which may interfere with the crucial functions. Drinking water, waste water or surface water (lakes and rivers) can be analyzed by comparing the physical, chemical and biological parameters with the reference standards.

Physical indicators: Colour, odour, taste, turbidity, conductivity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are some of the indicators which fall under this category. Most of these can be determined without any tests, just by observation. TDS measures the mass of filtrable residue while TSS measures the mass of non-filtrable residue.

Chemical indicators: pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), heavy metals and nitrates are some of the tests performed to assess the quality of water. BOD is the amount of oxygen needed by aerobic microorganisms to break down organic matter at a certain temperature, during a specific time. COD test is used to determine the amount of oxidizable pollutants which are present in surface water or waste water.

Biological indicators: Presence of insects like Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera, microorganisms like Escherichia coli and Coliform bacteria are used as biological indicators. Certain molluscs like Bivalve molluscs are used as bioindicators for aquatic environments.

At BioMall, one can find service providers to carry out water analysis in terms of conductivity, alkanity, presence of heavy metals, chlorides, BOD, COD, ammoniacal nitrogen, TSS, TDS and many more parameters.
