Ferric chloride by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. Also called Iron(III) chloride, this is a chemical compound with iron in the +3 oxidation state. This reagent is available as a black powder which is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, and slightly soluble in carbon disulphide, however practically insoluble in ethyl acetate. This reagent has a boiling point of 315 C and a melting point at 306 C. Anhydrous iron(III) chloride is deliquescent in nature and forms hydrated hydrogen chloride mists in moist air. CAS No. 7705-08-0 Quantity Provided: 1 kg per pack Molecular Formula: FeCl3 Molecular Weight: 162.21 Soluble in water Ferric chloride is widely used in chemical and biological sectors. Industrially, it is used in sewage treatment and drinking water production. In its anhydrous form it is used as a drying reagent in certain reactions. Ferric chloride can be applied to detect the presence of phenol compounds in organic synthesis. In laboratories, it is used as a Lewis acid for catalysing reactions such as chlorination of aromatic compounds, and Friedel-Crafts reaction of aromatics. It can also be used to detect the presence of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid and gamma-butyrolactone. These reagents may be used in the synthesis of various compounds in industrial processes, and are suitable for research.
