A significant number of bacteria in carbohydrate media can produce hydrogen sulfide in small quantities from amino acids containing sulfur, such as cysteine. When in contact with lead acetate, hydrogen sulfide produces a black precipitate, which is easily recognizable by a visible black-coloured reaction on the hydrogen sulfide paper strip. The lead acetate method is more sensitive than any other method for detecting the production of hydrogen sulfide.
