Agarose Gel Electrophoresis is a technique which is used for the analysis of DNA or RNA by allowing the fragments of nucleic acids to migrate in a gel made of agarose under the influence of an electric field. To visualise the nucleic acid bands formed, a stain is incorporated into the gel. Such dyes should ideally bind to the DNA and stain it for visualization. Traditionally, ethidium bromide is added to gels as a DNA binding dye, but is highly carcinogenic and DNA purification from the gel after staining can be difficult. The NanoGreen DNA Elpho Buffer from Genei is an alternative to ethidium bromide. It can be incorporated into the running buffer during gel preparation. This dye offers an advantage of being non-toxic and the DNA run the gel can be purified and processed for further use for applications such as cloning, PCR amplification or restriction digestion.
