This compound is an effective inhibitor for enzymes which bind that particular residue such as proteolytic enzymes like plasmin, the enzyme responsible for fibrinolysis. It is marketed as Amicar, where it is effective in the treatment of certain bleeding disorders. Studies indicate that it inhibits the activation of the first component of the complement system. It additionally binds and inactivates Carboxypeptidase B. Aminocaproic acid is an intermediate in the polymerization of Nylon-6, where it is formed by ring-opening hydrolysis of caprolactam.
