• Acetaldehyde diethyl acetal has a wide range of applications in various sectors. It is a major flavouring component of distilled beverages, especially malt whisky and sherry. Its derivative acetaldehyde has various uses. Urea and acetaldehyde combine to give a widely used resin. Acetic anhydride reacts with acetaldehyde to yield ethylidene diacetate, which is a precursor to vinyl acetate, that is used to produce polyvinyl acetate. It is an industrially important solvent and is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of a wide range of compounds. When oxidized it forms acetic acid and ethanol on reduction. The interaction of Criegee intermediate (CH2OO) with acetaldehyde has been measured.
