The Alternative Thioglycollate Medium is suggested for testing the sterility of specific biological products that might have a murky or thick consistency. Alternative Thioglycollate Medium is formulated as described in the N.I.H. memorandum. It is used for the sterility testing of certain biological products which are turbid. The pancreatic digest of casein provides nitrogen and carbon compounds, long-chain amino acids, and other vital nutrients. Meanwhile, yeast extract acts as a source of essential nutrients for any contaminants that may be present. Dextrose serves as the medium's energy source. Sodium chloride is responsible for maintaining the osmotic balance of the medium, and L-cystine, an amino acid, is a source of essential growth factors.
