Antibiotic Susceptibility Tests are conducted in microbiological laboratories to study the effect of an antibiotic on the growth of a microbe. The most common method to study antibiotic susceptibility includes the Kirby-Bauer Method. In this method, small discs saturated with antibiotic is placed on the plate containing the bacteria. A zone of inhibition of growth around the disc is observed to study susceptibility of the microbe to the antibiotic. Amikacin- AK-30mcg is a product by Micromaster. This drug is an antibacterial antibiotic. It is administered against pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infections, etc. It comes under the class of aminoglycoside drugs. The drug has maximum activity against multi-drug resistance, aerobic, gram-negative species of bacteria such as, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Serratia, Klebsiella etc. It is administered to treat bronchiectasis, meningitis, mycobacterial infections, respiratory tract infections, etc. The drug exerts its antibacterial activity by binding to the 16S ribosomal RNA and 30S subunit of the ribosome thus, effectively changing the shape of the translational complex and inhibiting protein synthesis.
