B-Alanine has a wide range of applications in biological and chemical industries. It undergoes a transamination reaction with pyruvate to form malonate-semialdehyde and L-alanine. This product is further converted by malonate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase into malonate, which is used to generate malonyl-CoA and run the fatty acid biosynthesis. Additionally, beta-alanine can be diverted into the biosynthesis of Pantothenate and Coenzyme A. It has been reported that -alanine supplements can increase exercise performance in athletes.
