This BALSAM CANADA (colourless) is of laboratory grade. This is a resinous exudate derived from a tree known as Myroxylon, which grows in Central America and South America. This resin mixture contains 25 or so different substances, including cinnamein, cinnamic acid, cinnamyl cinnamate, benzyl benzoate, benzoic acid, and vanillin. It can be obtained by scorching or inflicting V-shaped wounds on the bark of the trunk of the tree, after which distillation of the exudate balsam yields an essential oil. Balsam Peru has a variety of applications in chemical and biological sectors. It is majorly used in food and drinks for flavouring, in perfumes and toiletries for fragrance, and in medicine and pharmaceutical items for healing properties. It is incorporated in oral and lip ointments, tincture of benzoin, wound spray, calamine lotion, surgical dressings, dental cement, eugenol used by dentists, some periodontal impression materials, and also in the treatment of dry socket in dentistry. Due to its optical properties as a glue, balsam Peru is also usually used as a mounting medium for microscope specimens.
