High grade C.L.E.D Agar Base w/o Indicator is supplied by Micromaster. It is available in the form of a cream to yellow homogeneous free flowing powder with a pH in the range of 7.1 to 7.5. For maximum efficiency, it must be stored below 30C in tightly closed container.

It was observed that the swarming of Proteus species on a solid medium, could be controlled by restricting the electrolytes. Initially, the swarming of Proteus was controlled by adding alcohol, surface-active agent, sodium azide, boric acid etc. to the medium. The medium was later modified by Mackey and Sandys, where they replaced mannitol with lactose and sucrose and elevated the concentration of agar and bromo thymol blue. This formulation was further modified by the same authors and came to be known as C.L.E.D. (Cystine-Lactose-Electrolyte-Deficient) by deleting the sucrose and by including L-cystine for promoting the growth of cystine dependant dwarf coliform colony. This medium is primarily recommended for use in urine bacteriology, promoting the growth of all urinary pathogens. C.L.E.D. Medium is also used for dipstick procedures and as dip inoculum transport medium for urine specimens. Peptic digest of animal tissue, beef extract, casein enzymic hydrolysate provides essential growth nutrients. Lactose is the fermentable sugar. L-cystine supports the growth of dwarf coliform colony. Bromo thymol blue turns yellow at acidic pH. Agar acts as the solidifying agent. Bacteriuria may be quantitated by inoculating the surface of an agar medium by proper dilution.
