It was first obtained by the oxidation of indigo dye by the action of nitric acid and chromic acids. Isatin can be isolated from many plant such as Calanthe discolour, Couroupita guianensis and Isatis tinctorial. It can be synthesized from -formyl amides in a simple one pot synthesis in the presence of pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) with very good yield.
Isatins can be synthesized from -formyl amides in good yields via one-pot intramolecular cyclization-oxidation reaction in the presence of pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC). The reaction proceeded smoothly under air, offers a broad substrate scope, and is operationally simple.
