Isophorone is a colorless to white liquid with a peppermint like odor. It is also known as 3,5,5-Trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-1-one,1,1,3-Trimethyl-3-cyclohexene-5-one, Isoforone, Isoacetophorone and 3,5,5-Trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (IUPAC name). It has a density of 0.9255 g/cm3. It has a melting point of 8.1 C (17.4 F; 265.0 K) and a boiling point of 215.32 C (419.58 F; 488.47 K).It is an ,-unsaturated cyclic ketone soluble in ethers, acetone, benzene, acetone, hexane, toluene, dichloromethane and alcohols. It is degraded by hydroxyl radicals. It is produced on a large scale in industries by the aldol condensation of acetone using KOH. It is used as a solvent and as a precursor for polymers. Its hydrogenated derivative is used in the production of polycarbonates.
