Mannitol Salt Agar (USP/EP/BP/JP/IP) is supplied by TM Media. The use of Mannitol Salt Agar is suggested for the specific isolation of pathogenic Staphylococci from pharmaceutical products through microbial limit testing, in accordance with the unified procedures of USP/EP/BP/JP. This agar is selectively designed for this purpose. Mannitol Salt Agar (USP/EP/BP/JP/IP) includes beef extract, a pancreatic digest of casein, and peptic digest of animal tissue, which provide critical growth factors like nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, and trace nutrients, making the medium highly nutritious. The high concentration (7.5%) of sodium chloride in the medium inhibits the growth of most bacteria except Staphylococci. Mannitol is included in the medium as a fermentable carbohydrate, which causes a change in the phenol red indicator, helping in the differentiation of staphylococcal species.
