Mercury(II) chloride or mercuric chloride is available as a white crystalline powder. It is highly toxic to humans but was once used for the treatment of syphilis and is no longer used due to the availability of other less toxic treatments. It is used as a catalyst in the conversion of acetylene to vinyl chloride which when polymerized gives polyvinyl chloride(PVC). It is also used in analytical chemistry and organic synthesis reactions. It is used as an antifungal agent in plant tissue culture for the sterilization of plant parts. It is also used as a precursor for forming an amalgam with metals. Amalgams such as aluminum amalgam can undergo a variety of reactions and are widely used can be used in various organic chemical synthesis. It was once used in the development of positive pictures in the collodion process of the 1800s. It was also used for preserving biological specimens and in the treatment of wood against moths, mites and mold. It has also historic evidence of being used in crimes.
