Mercury(II) nitrate or mercuric nitrate is a mercury salt of nitric acid. It is toxic, has a sharp odor and is available as a colorless or white crystal powder. It is generally available in its monohohydrate form with a melting point of 79 C (174 F; 352 K). It is soluble in water, nitric acid, acetone, ammonia and insoluble in alcohols. It was used in the carroting process to make felt by treating fur. Excessive exposure to mercy(II) nitrate can lead to psychological illness commonly known by the phrase mad as a hatter. It is used in mercuration reactions and is particularly used in the reactions involving ketones. It is not flammable but it acts as an oxidizer and can speed up flames. it can react with alcohols to form explosive compounds. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may lead to explosion.
