Mercuric sulphate (or mercury(II) sulfate) is available as odorless white colored crystalline powder. It is denser than water and forms sulphuric acid in water. It is toxic but is used in medicine, for gold and silver extraction, and as a source for other mercuric compounds. An acidic solution of mercury sulfate ( Denigs' reagent) was used as a common qualitative analysis reagent. It forms a yellow or red precipitate with tertiary alcohols. It is also used as a catalyst for the production of acetaldehyde from acetylene and water. It is toxic and can cause acute poisoning.
