Mercuric thiocyanate is an odorless white crystalline powder. It is insoluble in water and sinks in water due to its higher density. It is very toxic and can cause acute poisoning with symptoms like tightness in the chest, difficulty in breathing, coughing, and pain in the chest. It can also cause necrosis, pain, vomiting and severe purging when ingested. When heated it decomposes and increase to many times its volume resembling a serpent and hence is widely used in fireworks as pharaohs serpent.
