Mesityl oxide (also known as 4-methylpent-3-en-2-one, isobutenyl methyl ketonemethyl isobutenyl ketone and isopropylidene acetone) is an oily appearing light yellowish liquid with honey like odor. It is soluble in most organic solvents and also in water to some extent. It is a flammable liquid and has a flash point of 31 C (304 K). It is found naturally in herbs and is a flavoring ingredient. It is used as a solvent for plastics, in paint removers and as an insect repellent. It is synthesized by the aldol condensation of acetone to give diacetone alcohol, which upon dehydration yields mesityl oxide. It is used in the synthesis of methyl isobutyl ketone by hydrogenation.
