Ox bile is a product provided by Micromaster. The ox bile used in laboratories consists of free bile and conjugates bile salts. It is used in media for the inhibition of gram-positive bacteria, while leaving the gram-negative bacteria relatively undisturbed. Ox bile consists of bile free and conjugated bile salts. The bile salts in fresh bile exist in a conjugated manner with bile acid, glycine or taurine. Bacteria produce some enzymes which convert bile conjugates to the inhibitory free bile acids through hydrolysis. This increases the phosphate and citrate levels.
